Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi announced on Monday that Pakistan decided to extend an invitation to former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the inauguration of the Kartarpur corridor, which is scheduled to open in November.
"The Kartarpur corridor is an important project, the prime minister has a personal interest in him," Qureshi said in a video message.
"After the consultations, Pakistan decided to invite Manmohan Singh to the inauguration, whom we hold in high esteem. He will represent the Sikh community."
"On behalf of the government, as Pakistan's Foreign Minister, I invite you to attend the inauguration of the Kartarpur corridor," said Qureshi, adding that the government also intends to send Singh a formal written invitation.
The Foreign Minister also invited the Sitr Yatris in his message, saying: "We also wait for the Sikh Yatris […] to come and participate in the 550th anniversary of the birth of Baba Guru Nanak. "
Earlier this month, the director of the Pakistani project Atif Majeed had said that the visa-free border crossing from India to Kartarpur, Pakistan, would open on November 9, just before the 550th anniversary of the birth of the founder of Sikhism, Baba Guru Nanak, November 12.
It was also announced that Pakistan agreed to allow 5,000 Sikh pilgrims from India to visit the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib daily in Narowal through the Kartarpur corridor.
Pakistan has kept the corridor project isolated from recent tensions with India over the annulment of article 370, subsequent repressive actions in occupied Kashmir and intense violations of the ceasefire in the Control Line. The project was also not affected by the previous episode of escalation between the two sides after the Pulwama attack in February.
