Iran names Khameneis son Mojtaba as new supreme leader —

A council of Iranian experts has named Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new supreme leader, succeeding his father Ali Khamenei, state media reported.

Mojtaba, a mid-level cleric with close ties to the Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), has long been seen in Iran’s ruling circles as a potential successor to his father, who died after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran.

Iran’s ruling ideology frowns on hereditary principles, but he has strong followers within the IRGC and his late father’s still-influential post.
