Jayasuriya took over as Sri Lanka coach immediately after the 2024 T20 World Cup. Many of his better achievements came in his first few months. Sri Lanka recorded their first ODI bilateral series win over India in 27 years in August 2024, won the Test at The Oval in September that year (but had already lost that series), and also beat New Zealand 2-0 at home in the Test.
Jayasuriya’s final years in office were marked by failure. Sri Lanka lost their home T20 World Cup representative for the fourth time in a row. Sri Lanka also underperformed in the 2025 Asia Cup and was underwhelmed in the T20I tri-series held in Pakistan last year. Even before this T20 World Cup, England swept Sri Lanka 3-0 in T20Is.
Jayasuriya had previously served as chief selector on two occasions.
