Fitness features require extension
Google's Wear OS watches struggle to distinguish themselves, but some poke their heads right above their current state with a sleek appearance and proper performance. This is the case of the fifth generation of fossils.
The $ 300 price tag is within the reasonable range of these stainless steel, fashion-first Wear OS watches, but as usual, the problem with Wear OS smartwatches is related to the software experience.
Stylish and versatile stainless steel case
Most Wear OS watches try to look like traditional watches, but so does Fossil Gen 5. Looks so bold and chooses a more restrained and masculine look. You might want to customize your watch face because the preloaded options aren't particularly satisfying, but they look great in the gym just like suits and ties.
I've reviewed the more masculine option, the & # 39; Carlisle & # 39; style. There is also a & # 39; Julianna & # 39; model taking a more feminine approach. The difference is completely decorative because both have the same size and the same function.
This watch is also 3 ATM water resistant and perfect for swimming but fine but not diving and the watch strap is compatible with the 22mm band. Still, I am very happy with the basic silicone strap.

Knowing which buttons and features you have is a guessing game that always uses your Wear OS watch. There are three on the right side of Fossil Gen 5. The middle one is used as a rotating crown to scroll through the list. Depending on Fossil's stylistic roots, the default behavior of the top button is to easily change the look of the clock by setting a customized watch face as a shortcut. You can also see Google Pay by double clicking this button. The middle button is what you expected. The home button displays a list of apps when you are already at home.
The app switcher will be perfect if it is supported by Wear OS, but at least you should be happy with the music controls, so you don't have to use one of the other buttons. The bottom button is set to Google Fit, but you can easily navigate by swiping right once on the screen. Thankfully, both the top and bottom buttons can be configured to launch the app you want (though there aren't many to choose from), you can't select a double press hotkey.
The basics deal
It covers the basics in terms of first-party applications. There are alarm clocks, calendars, stopwatches, weather apps, Google Fit, and other essential apps. The alarm clock works fine and works fine except for minor exceptions. There is a permanent flaw in finding the alarm clock app to check for notifications or turning off the alarm when an alarm occurs. This fault occurs if you turn off the display before going to bed and the alarm is not displayed on the screen when the time is up. But if left as it is, this defect will disappear.
Google Fit also pairs with heart rate sensors and GPS to do the right thing for fitness tracking, which allows you to record your workout data for any workout, either through common workout options or, more specifically, with specific activities. You won't find the more detailed and varied workout tracking options or sleep tracking features of the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2, so you won't get the most complete health suite. Fossil Gen 5 should work well for those who aren't interested in a watch that can calculate reps more accurately, track specific workouts, and quantify sleep in every sleep.

Google Assistant also offers onboard features like language translation, notification settings, or asking questions just like on other smart devices. It's a bit slow though.
Overall, Google's Wear OS works well. With atypical 1GB RAM and the latest Snapdragon Wear 3100, it's the softest Wear OS watch I've ever used. There was no delay, freezing or dropping during use. Fossil Gen 5 has always done what I want quickly.
Rotating crowns are great for scrolling lists. Although it can't be explained on certain screens. Like navigating the OS, the rotating crown satisfies and responds to the right amount of resistance to keep the scroll tactile and accurate. I actually prefer the feel of the spinning crown on Apple Watch.
Fossil Gen 5 is the first Wear OS device to support tethered phone calls on iPhone.
About Apple, Fossil Gen 5 is the first Wear OS device to support tethered phones on iPhone, thanks to Fossil's own problems. If you make a call on Gen 5, the speaker doesn't have to have a watch directly on your ear, but it's okay to get a call on your watch near your mouth.
The only other problem with the core experience is a rather consistent problem with connectivity. On the iPhone 11 Pro and Galaxy Note 10, there was often an unknown notification on the watch, which disconnected from the phone for an unknown time. Every time this happens, you have to go into settings and turn on Bluetooth again. When mysteriously flipped over, I had to wait until it connected to the phone again. I tested it on another device and it did not have any issues, so it is possible that my device is defective, but if you are experiencing the same issue, please contact Fossil Support.
Wear OS disappoints good hardware manufacturers
Unfortunately, it's true. Google's Wear OS is the only viable option for Android-compatible smartwatch manufacturers, not Samsung. Wear OS doesn't suffer from sophisticated features or functionality, but lags behind the app experiences it offers. Samsung's Tizen is struggling with third-party app support but is still ahead of Google and offers a more complete first-party app experience.
As mentioned earlier, if fitness is the focus, it's much better to use a Samsung Galaxy Watch or Apple Watch. This is also true if you want to integrate third-party apps. Wear OS has apps like Strava, Google Maps, Uber, and Spotify, but if you're looking for apps other than those apps or Google's suite of apps, there aren't many options.

The app store for Wear OS is very irregular and lacks the quality and quantity of Apple Watch. Even Samsung's watches get better with third-party support, but not much.
As much as I like Samsung's watch and Tizen OS, there are certain navigation features and aesthetic feature choices preferred by Fossil 5 and Wear OS. However, due to a lack of health and poor third-party app support, it's hard to make Fossil Gen 5 much harder than it looks because of OS competition rather than appearance.
Lasts about a day
The fossil did not add a larger battery, but now it offers some battery modes that can be used to squeeze out a little more juice. Each battery uses only a few features when repairing the battery, but the custom mode allows you to choose what you can do without hours of use.
The daily mode keeps the watch fully functional throughout the day, but it must be marked on the charger before going to bed. Disabling sleep tracking is a very simple question.
Price, Availability and Warranty
Fossil Gen 5 sells for $ 300 and comes with a two-year limited warranty against defects.
Our take
If Wear OS is the issue, Fossil Gen 5 is your best bet. Robust stainless steel construction balances versatile appearance.
Is there an alternative?
For Wear OS, there are several options offered by designers like Michael Kors, Montblanc, Armani Exchange, and more. The Mobvoi Ticwatch Pro is about $ 50 cheaper, but a bit bulkier than a fossil watch and not aesthetically chic.
In addition to that, depending on the size of the case you choose, the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is priced under $ 20 or the same. The watch retains a minimalist look, but it has improved health and activity features and slightly improved support for third-party apps.
And there is an Apple Watch. Gen 5 is compatible with iPhone, but there's no reason to buy something else instead of Apple Watch. You can argue that Fossil Gen 5 looks better, but you can't really compete on the other side. You can also buy Series 3 for at least $ 200 from Series 3 and get all of the same features or spend $ 50 more on ECG features.
How long will it last?
The generous 2-year warranty, 3 ATM waterproof and rugged stainless steel construction make it possible to use this watch for 2-3 years before the battery life becomes too long.
Should I buy one?
Yes. It's one of the nicest and best-selling Wear OS watches.
