Shell, EDP team up to pitch offshore wind farm to Connecticut

Mayflower Wind, a joint venture between Shell New Energies US and EDPR Offshore North America, announced Monday it has submitted bids to Connecticut state officials to develop and build an offshore wind farm about 20 miles south of Massachusetts' coastal Martha's Vineyard.

One proposal includes a 408 megawatt wind power project and the other includes a 804 megawatt wind power plant. According to the proposal, which darkened many details, both will wind for 20 years. The project will be built with water capable of supporting up to 1,600 megawatts of maritime wind from the waters that the federal government rented to Mayflower Wind last year.

The Dutch-based Shell, which operates its US operations in Houston, is committed to expanding its presence in the power business, including the offshore wind power in the United States.

Headquartered in Portugal, EDP is the fourth largest wind energy producer in the world. The company's North American renewable business is based in Houston and has 49 wind farms and five solar power plants.
