Meesha Shafi files Rs2bn damages suit against Ali Zafar

Musician Meesha Shafi filed a claim for damages of Rs2,000 million in a Lahore court of sessions against fellow artist Ali Zafar for making false accusations against her in the media, emerged Wednesday.

The claim for damages includes Rs1bn for the loss of goodwill and reputation caused, and Rs1bn for "mental torture and agony."

In addition to the damages requested, Shafi asked the court to approve a decree to declare Zafar's statements about her as "false, malicious and defamatory" and "made to damage the plaintiff's reputation."

"It is prayed that the defendant (Zafar) is permanently restricted from making any other defamatory statement against the plaintiff (Shafi)," the lawsuit said, adding that the defamatory statements had caused a loss to Shafi's goodwill and had negatively affected

"In addition, it has caused mental agony and anguish to the plaintiff and therefore [the] the defendant is now obliged to pay damages. "

Shafi's team had also sent a legal notice to Zafar for defamation in May.

Previously, Zafar had filed a claim for damages of one billion rupees against Shafi on charges of sexual harassment. The case is currently ongoing in a court of sessions in Lahore.

Zafar took legal action after Shafi accused him of harassing her "more than twice."
