Former Karachi police chief Shahid Hayat passes away at 54

Shahid Hayat, joint CEO of the Intelligence Office, died Tuesday at Aga Khan Hospital in Karachi.

According to a source within the Intelligence Office, he had been under cancer treatment in the hospital.

He had scheduled to join the Pakistan High Commission in the United Kingdom, the source added.

His funeral prayers will be held on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Garden Police in Karachi, after which his body will be taken to his hometown of Dera Ismail Khan for burial.

Hayat had previously served as the South Director of the Federal Investigation Agency, as well as a Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) in Karachi.

Sindh's police inspector general, Syed Kaleem Imam, expressed deep sadness over Hayat's death and paid tribute to his services to the police department.

Considered a direct police officer, Hayat has had many high profile cases to his credit. However, it was his participation in the murder case of Mir Murtaza Bhutto that kept him in the news for a long time.

Some high-profile cases whose investigation headed Hayat include oversight of the investigation of the Shahzeb murder case, which culminated in the successful custody of Shahrukh Jatoi, since his conviction, and his return to Karachi to be tried. Another case related to the arrest of a man known as "the white corolla wallah."

Hayat also led the investigation into the scandal of false degrees involving Axact in Karachi. He also oversaw the investigation into the Abbas Town attack and arrested several suspects.

Hayat graduated from the University of Punjab and briefly joined the police service in Punjab in 1991 before beginning his long period in the Sindh police.
