
KARACHI: Police Inspector General Dr. Syed Kaleem Imam realized an incident in which unknown persons attempted to kidnap the coordinator of the opposition leader at the Sindh Assembly on Sunday.
The SHO of the city of Mobina Mehboob Illahi said that three armed men seized Rehan Zafar Ghouri when he left his home in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Block-4.
Seeing the fight, a policeman from the same police station, later identified as Shahnawaz, who was passing through the area, challenged the suspects who fled during an exchange of gunfire, he said.
The official said Ghouri, the coordinator of opposition leader Firdous Shamim Naqvi of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, was approaching his car parked in front of his house in Azeeem Goth when three armed men traveling on two motorcycles attempted to kidnap him to gun tip However, Shahnawaz, who was in civvies, rescued him.
The SHO said that during the exchange of shots, the suspects escaped on one motorcycle and abandoned the other. The police confiscated the bicycle to investigate it.
The SHO area said it could be an attempted kidnapping or an offer of theft.
Mr. Naqvi visited the police station and thanked the police officer for frustrating the incident.
The coordinator in his statement to the police said he had not received any threats from anywhere.
Investigators collected five spent bullet caps from the crime scene, including three fired by the suspects.
Meanwhile, IGP Sindh became aware of the incident and sought a detailed investigation report from the SSP-East, a police spokesman said.
