Treason case against Musharraf to be heard on a daily

ISLAMABAD: The special court dedicated to the trial for high treason to former retired military dictator, General Pervez Musharraf, decided to proceed daily in the case to conclude the pending trial since December 2013.

The special court composed of Judge Nazar Akbar and Judge Shahid Karim resumed the proceedings in the treason trial on Tuesday.

Attorney Raza Bashir, the defense attorney appointed by the law ministry by order of the special court, filed a request requesting his meeting with Musharraf to get instructions from him to argue the case.

The court expressed dissatisfaction with the submission of the request and said that the defendant had already been summoned to register his statement under Section 342 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

The court has prohibited the lawyer Salman Safdar from representing the defendant who escaped and the lawyer Bashir has pledged to help the court to conclude the trial, much delayed.

Lawyer Bashir said he had submitted the request to ask permission to meet with Musharraf and prepare arguments for the case.

After brief arguments, the judges suspended the procedure for a short break.

When the proceedings began again, they informed the prosecution and defense attorney that, given that the presiding judge Tahira Safdar was not present, the court had decided to postpone the hearing until October 8.

The court ordered Attorney Bashir to prepare arguments as the proceedings in the treason trial would resume daily from the next date.
