According to Cejudo, he probably won’t.
“Check this out: If I’m going to fight for a third belt, it has to be the undisputed belt,” Cejudo said on his Pound 4 Pound podcast. "It takes a little bit of time to become a triple champion. He’s also facing a dude who’s already the undisputed champion, so I can actually see where the odds are coming from. So I feel like Ferreira should stay at light heavyweight a little bit longer and fight immediately, without controversy. Immediately. It’s not interim anymore. He just waited and approved it.”
If you were going to wait for a promotion, you probably would have waited for this.
“What I’m trying to say is that you don’t miss your chance and you fight.” Cejudo continued: "Allow Tom’s eye to heal. Because now, look, Tom is chasing not one, but two big dogs to make him champion. He can make history with one. He has to fight two to become the first three-division champion. That changes things because Tom doesn’t think he can get past Cyryl Gane. I think that weight is real.”
To be precise, Cejudo is not suggesting a winning mentality, but rather the path of least resistance.
“I think there are too many light heavyweight contenders for Ferreira to pass up.” Cejudo said. “I think there are still a lot of names to take out. I think there will be a big fight at light heavyweight. [Carlos] Ulberg, who has never fought. Of course he could have beaten him. There is Khamzat Chimaev. “They were both kind of tweeting at each other and stuff like that was going on.”
