Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed his country’s position on tensions in the Middle East during a phone call with Iranian President Massoud Fezeshkian.
The Kremlin said in a statement Friday that Putin expressed condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, his family and senior military officials.
The statement "reaffirms Russia’s principled position on the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities, abandonment of a strong solution to the problems surrounding Iran and throughout the Middle East, and a rapid return to the path to a political and diplomatic solution.”
The Kremlin also said Putin was maintaining regular contact with leaders of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries amid heightened tensions across the region.

According to the statement, Fezeshkian expressed gratitude for Russia’s support during the crisis.
