Montane’s Torren is an award-winning jacket, and for good reason. There’s a lot of great stuff here, and the design is pleasantly light and comfortable to wear. This is enough skill for adventures at altitude, but doesn’t feel excessive when walking your dog. Torren’s recycled nylon shell is highly water-resistant without the use of harmful chemicals. Why We Love It
The Torren is actually so water resistant that it kept me out of the rain all day when I was out in the wet and windy Storm Ashley last October. Montane uses their own brand of Petrichor technology to waterproof this coating, but it appears to be superior when compared to Gore-Tex and does not use Pfa, which is harmful to the environment.

Torren is ready for dangerous days outdoors thanks to a helmet-compatible hood, harness-compatible pockets, and articulated arms that provide a variety of movements. But it’s simple enough to use for comfortable hiking as well, and while it fits on the slim side, you can attach a thinner insulated jacket underneath it. It’s difficult to pick holes in the design, but if push comes to shove, the problem is that the only colors available other than plain black are pastels.

Why We Love It
Craghoppers’ AquaDry membrane proved its worth in testing, shrugging off the rain on the Caldbeck II during our outing. However, keep in mind that this performance may decrease over time and therefore requires a rebuke. Elsewhere, the fabric has a bit of stretch, the fit is comfortable without feeling boxy, and there’s room for layering underneath for cold days. The main fabric and lining are made from recycled polyester, and the deep pockets are great for storing your phone or keeping your hands warm.

At the time of writing this jacket’s RRP of £160 has been reduced to between £48 and £80 depending on the colour, but it still remains good value even considering the list price.

Gore-Tex’s Pro Waterproof material is PFC-free, meaning it doesn’t use chemicals that are harmful to the environment. However, doing so does not reduce performance. It’s waterproof so rain falls off the material like it’s off a duck’s back. I also evaluated the fit of the Beta AR, which is streamlined but has room for layers underneath.

From the helmet-compatible hood to the waterproof zippers, every detail has been carefully thought out, the quality is excellent, and it looks comfortable to wear. The women’s version of this jacket also comes with an adjustable waist and wrists. I wore the Beta AR in windy, wet, and cold weather and it kept me dry all day, never feeling wet or hot even with layers of clothing underneath. Yes, the Beta AR is expensive, but it will keep you comfortable on everything from mountain missions to pub walks.

Why We Love It
\n I’ve had a lot of fun hiking on the Latok Pro. Gore-Tex has always been a reliable waterproofing technology and Latok has a hydrostatic head rating of 28,000mm. This prevented a single drop of rain seeping in while hiking in the Lake District’s consistently wet weather. The hood was also my favorite product in the test. The hood stayed in place even in strong winds, and the stiff brim kept the rain from hitting my face. Despite its weatherproof punch and Recco reflectors (which use a special radar detector to enable search by professional rescue teams), the Latok Pro is lightweight at just 366g, making it comfortable to wear all day and fitting well inside a backpack.

This design uses Haglöfs’ own brand Proof technology rather than a Gore-Tex membrane, but is extremely resistant to constant rain and wind. It’s not as breathable as a premium Gore-Tex shell, so it may feel a little warm when walking uphill. The minimalist design also means there are no features like fit zippers or chest pockets. I’m a seasoned adventure travel writer and gear tester who’s been using outdoor kit around the world for over 10 years. I’ve hiked miles in the name of testing waterproof jackets. How I Tested It
Fortunately, the rain has been constant for the past few months. This means I’ve had plenty of time to figure out which waterproof products will keep me dry during long rainy days outdoors. I’ve taken every recommended jacket on hikes around the country, from the top of Stickle Tarn in the Lake District to the sea-splashy coast of Cornwall. The mild weather also gave us the opportunity to test another key feature of good waterproofing: breathability, on muddy trails and city streets.

Montane’s Torren is an award-winning jacket, and for good reason. There’s a lot of great stuff here, and the design is pleasantly light and comfortable to wear. This is enough skill for adventures at altitude, but doesn’t feel excessive when walking your dog. Torren’s recycled nylon shell is highly water-resistant without the use of harmful chemicals. This is something every outdoor clothing manufacturer should strive to achieve.
Why We Love It
The Torren is actually so water resistant that it kept me out of the rain all day when I was out in the wet and windy Storm Ashley last October. Montane uses their own brand of Petrichor technology to waterproof this coating, but it appears to be superior when compared to Gore-Tex and does not use Pfa, which is harmful to the environment.
Torren is ready for dangerous days outdoors thanks to a helmet-compatible hood, harness-compatible pockets, and articulated arms that provide a variety of movements. But it’s simple enough to use for comfortable hiking as well, and while it fits on the slim side, you can attach a thinner insulated jacket underneath it. It’s difficult to pick holes in the design, but if push comes to shove, the problem is that the only colors available other than plain black are pastels.
It’s a shame… There are limited neutral colors available.

There’s no need to spend a lot of money on a technical shell if all you want is a reliable waterproof jacket for dog walking, school runs, and weekend walks. In that context, Craghoppers Caldbeck II is ideal. This is a practical, full-length jacket with a well-fitting hood and a waterproof membrane that protects against showers.
Why We Love It
Craghoppers’ AquaDry membrane proved its worth in testing, shrugging off the rain on the Caldbeck II during our outing. However, keep in mind that this performance may decrease over time and therefore requires a rebuke. Elsewhere, the fabric has a bit of stretch, the fit is comfortable without feeling boxy, and there’s room for layering underneath for cold days. The main fabric and lining are made from recycled polyester, and the deep pockets are great for storing your phone or keeping your hands warm.
At the time of writing this jacket’s RRP of £160 has been reduced to between £48 and £80 depending on the colour, but it still remains good value even considering the list price.
That’s a shame … The biggest discounts are limited to specific colors. The styling is more practical than pretty.

Why We Love It
Gore-Tex’s Pro Waterproof material is PFC-free, meaning it doesn’t use chemicals that are harmful to the environment. However, doing so does not reduce performance. It’s waterproof so rain falls off the material like it’s off a duck’s back. I also evaluated the fit of the Beta AR, which is streamlined but has room for layers underneath.
From the helmet-compatible hood to the waterproof zippers, every detail has been carefully thought out, the quality is excellent, and it looks comfortable to wear. The women’s version of this jacket also comes with an adjustable waist and wrists. I wore the Beta AR in windy, wet, and cold weather and it kept me dry all day, never feeling wet or hot even with layers of clothing underneath. Yes, the Beta AR is expensive, but it will keep you comfortable on everything from mountain missions to pub walks.
It’s a shame… It’s definitely expensive. The average wearer does not need this level of waterproofing.

British climbing and mountaineering brand Rab designed the Latok Pro for instances where “breathability, durability and protection are needed in equal measure.” If you love hiking hills and dales in any weather, this jacket combines comfort and a women’s-specific fit with rain-resistant Gore-Tex in a stylish design.
Why We Love It
I have had many happy hikes on the Latok Pro. Gore-Tex has always been a reliable waterproofing technology and Latok has a hydrostatic head rating of 28,000mm. This prevented a single drop of rain seeping in while hiking in the Lake District’s consistently wet weather. The hood was also my favorite product in the test. The hood stayed in place even in strong winds, and the stiff brim kept the rain from hitting my face. Despite its weatherproof punch and Recco reflectors (which use a special radar detector to enable search by professional rescue teams), the Latok Pro is lightweight at just 366g, making it comfortable to wear all day and fitting well inside a backpack.
It’s a shame… It’s too technical and expensive for routine use.

Why We Love It
I’ve always evaluated Haglöfs’ outdoor kit and the Front Proof did not disappoint. First, it was so light that I barely felt I was wearing it. Plus, I was able to quickly pack it up and put it in my backpack once the rain stopped.
This design uses Haglöfs’ own brand Proof technology rather than a Gore-Tex membrane, but is extremely resistant to constant rain and wind. It’s not as breathable as a premium Gore-Tex shell, so it may feel a little warm when walking uphill. The minimalist design also means there are no features like fit zippers or chest pockets. However, considering its £140 price, weight and portability, the Front Proof is a great all-rounder for unpredictable weather.
It’s a shame… The design is somewhat minimalist.

Swedish brand Klättermusen has been making mountaineering gear since 1975, and if you want a hiking jacket that can also be worn for winter sports, the all-season Allgron 2.0 is perfect for you.
Why We Love It
Some high-end waterproofs do a great job of keeping the rain out, but they feel like plastic, are stiff, and can rustle loudly every time you walk. Allgron 2.0 from Klättermusen is soft and flexible to the touch and does not scratch the skin. Cut slightly longer than other jackets I’ve tested, this jacket covers more of the hips and keeps the lower body warm and dry. It sits well under the backpack without moving or burning.
There are many technical features here. It’s fully waterproof, has great pockets and ventilation zippers, and has built-in Recco reflectors for snow sports. I preferred the adjustable velcro on the wrists rather than the fussy bungees, but overall, of all the jackets I tested for comfort and women’s fit, this was my favorite.
It’s a shame… It’s painfully expensive, and I wear a bungee word on my wrist.

Montane’s Phase jacket is one of the brand’s best-sellers, and we can see why. It’s comfortable to wear and weatherproof enough for adventures at altitude, but doesn’t feel too much for everyday dog walking.
Why We Love It
Phase uses Gore-Tex for waterproofing and kept the rain out all day when I headed out to Storm Benjamin in the fall of 2025. Montane’s Barrier technology keeps it breathable, and the Phase jacket really stood out in warm, humid weather. I stayed comfortable and cool even when biking or trekking uphill.
Elsewhere, it has a helmet-compatible hood, harness-compatible pockets, and articulated arms to provide a variety of movements for climbing, mountaineering, and other high-octane activities. However, the Phase is simple enough to make for a comfortable hike. The fit is good, and although the sleeve length is adjustable, it is too long for me. However, their size is limited.

Why We Love It
The Roc Blanc Gen 4’s three-layer Gore-Tex Pro fabric protects against snow and sleet, and this jacket’s roomy cut allows for easy layering underneath. A mountain-specific design, including a helmet-compatible hood, large chest pocket (accessible even while wearing a harness), and ventilation zippers, makes this product suitable for tough days on the slopes while still being stylish enough to wear in a resort town.
At £480, the Roc Blanc Gen 4 is an investment piece, but it holds its own as one of the best ski jackets for performance, durability and comfort in harsh alpine environments. If you want the technical bit without the price tag, you can get the previous generation Roc Blanc jacket for £180.40.

The Torrentshell ticks a lot of boxes, from a cozy fleece-lined collar that feels good against the skin to a packable, adjustable hood. Water beaded on the surface of the jacket, effectively repelling water from the Cumbrian hills, and the good pit zippers made it breathable enough for hiking. However, this design is unlikely to be sufficiently breathable for activities that involve sweating a lot, such as hiking or hiking.
I also love how this lightweight coat fits in my pocket when the sun comes up. If you want to wear a thick padded jacket underneath, we recommend taking one size larger. In addition to high-quality jackets, Patagonia is an ethical choice. This jacket is fair trade and made using recycled materials.

Unlike some shell jackets that can feel plasticky, the Dukan’s soft inner lining makes it a lovely fit. The design is sustainable, made from partially recycled materials and repairable. One area where I thought the Ducan was a little off was the fit. I am a size 12 and the medium size fits snugly around the hips and is wide across the shoulders and arms. If you like a slim fit, this jacket may still suit you, but we recommend trying before you buy.

During testing, we found that Helly Hansen’s own brand of water-repellent technology made the rain sparkle brilliantly, and the detachable and adjustable hood fit well and protected our faces from the elements. The fabric isn’t very breathable, so you’ll end up sweating on the bus, but I still love these rain slickers for city slickers.

What you need to know
waterproof
Make sure the jacket you buy is labeled “waterproof” and not simply “waterproof” or “water repellent.” The latter two labels generally mean that the coat can resist light rain. For complete waterproofing, look for a jacket that integrates proven technology, such as Gore-Tex or private brand waterproofing, into the jacket’s outer layer (or hardshell).
Some brands also list the level of waterproofing their jacket offers, which is tested against hydrostatic head (this test evaluates the waterproofing ability of the fabric by applying increasing water pressure). It is only considered waterproof up to 1,500 mm. Anything over 5,000mm will be sufficiently waterproof for sustained rain, while a jacket between 10,000mm and 20,000mm will likely work in heavy rain or snow.

Inexpensive, sporty mac-insocks and rain ponchos will keep you dry when you need them, but they’re not breathable. They’re not ideal for hiking or biking because they make you sweat and get hot quickly. Instead, high-quality jackets contain a breathable membrane that wicks moisture so you don’t overheat.
Before you buy, think about how and where you will wear the jacket. For casual use, a long parka length jacket with some insulation will provide warmth. If you’re planning on going on a fast-paced hike or cycle, you’ll want something that’s lightweight, breathable, has no insulation, and has added ventilation zippers.
design and fit
A good jacket should fit snugly but not too tight around the waist, cuffs or neck. It should include taped seams, sealed or protected zippers, zippered pockets, and a well-designed, adjustable hood. If you’re an avid hiker, cyclist or climber, look for a jacket with a hood that can be worn over a helmet and a fit designed to be worn under a backpack and harness. A slim fit jacket will keep you warm. But in cold weather, make sure you have room underneath for a down layer or fleece layer.

There are rain-ready jackets at prices to suit almost every budget. Aim to spend around £150 on a good, versatile waterproof product. A premium £200+ jacket is only worth splurging on if you’re going to find yourself in a serious situation on a proper hiking trip.
It’s worth noting that no jacket can be completely waterproof forever, unless it’s a pure plastic mac with no breathability. If your coat begins to lose its water resistance (rain doesn’t just bead off but soaks into the outer layer), re-waterproof it with a treatment such as Nikwax.
