US stocks end volatile Q3 on positive note

New York: Wall Street shares gained on Monday, boosted by improving Chinese stocks and improving sentiment toward US-China trade negotiations.

Closely observed, China's Caixin manufacturing index rose from 50.4 to 51.4 in September despite the compromise of the US-China trade war that caused uncertainty about investment.

Analysts also cited comments from Trump administration officials who ignored the potential new US restrictions on Chinese investment. Friday the White House fell Friday after it reported plans to delist Chinese companies from the US stock market.

Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 0.4{7be40b84a6a43fc4fae13304fce9a2695859798abfc41afd127b9f8b21c5f9c5} to 26,916.69.

The broad S & P 500 rose 0.5{7be40b84a6a43fc4fae13304fce9a2695859798abfc41afd127b9f8b21c5f9c5} to 2,976.71, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.8{7be40b84a6a43fc4fae13304fce9a2695859798abfc41afd127b9f8b21c5f9c5} to 7,999.34.

Both the Dow and the S & P 500 rose slightly over the quarter, while the Nasdaq fell.

The stocks were beaten in August after the US and China announced new tariffs against each other, but the market rebounded as more messages were settled on both sides in September.

Quincy Krosby, senior market strategist at Prudential Financial, said he expects to resume talks between Beijing and Washington in October.

The talks are clearly positive for the market, as the impact on the global economy has had the biggest impact last quarter, Krosby said.

Of the individual shares, Apple rose 2.4{7be40b84a6a43fc4fae13304fce9a2695859798abfc41afd127b9f8b21c5f9c5}, as JPMorgan Chase's stock pointed out that its solid outlook for iPhone sales was underestimated.

This week's US economic indicators include the Institute for Supply Management's report on manufacturing and services sector activity and the Labor Department's September job report.
