a The realistic profile and thrilling basketball match report of snowboard champion Katie Ormerod turned out to be the first Guardian and Soccer School Young Sports Writer Award winner of the year.
The winner of the writer category at Caleb Waterhouse, ages 7-9, wrote about Ormerod, who attends elementary school in West Yorkshire. In the category from 12 to 12, Billy Taylor (12) wrote about the time he watched an NBA match in Los Angeles.
Hundreds of students participated in the competition, including guardian columnists, former British footballer Eni Aluko, and World Cup winner footballer Per Mertesacker.
"Caleb wrote an article that Katie learned valuable lessons about maintaining an active and positive attitude, even in disappointing situations," Aluko said.
Mertesacker said, “The standard is very impressive and it was difficult to choose a winner. "I enjoyed reading these works!"
The competition asked participants to fill out a match report of the sporting event or the profile of the selected athlete with up to 600 words.
Football was the most popular sport. The most popular personal athletes are Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé and Raheem Sterling. In older categories, those who wrote about Sterling mentioned his work in challenging the media to solve racism and change the message for young black players. Our participants saw him as an interesting role model for their generation. Other writers praised Mosala and James McClean for using their platform to support their beliefs.
Some of the young writers explored their interest in coaching and management with engaging explanations of the tactics and leadership skills of Wally Downs (AFC mble Bleddon) and Marcelo Bielsa (Leeds United). Match reports were not limited to Champions League or Premier League levels, including football leagues, leagues and school matches.
The emotional involvement and memory created by the sport was later captured in moving articles depicting unity with dead family members. One 9-year-old writer who won first place in an older group paid tribute to Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the owner of Leicester City. Judges thought he wrote a mature and sympathetic writing.
Some of the best participants found a personal relationship with their subjects; the mascot that Spurs held hands with Davinson Sánchez played the Everton fans who met Fulham and André Gomes, and could not forget how lovely he forgot. Another author complained about his father's half-hour Bovril stank (food and drink, food taught by many writers is an important part of the sporting experience).
The second most popular sport was athletics, followed by gymnastics. Even after retirement, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Dame Tanni Gray-Thompson are still impressive figures, and Dina Asher-Smith, Max Whitlock and Claudia Fragapane appeared. The entries included an extensive range of sports and included Gaelic football, synchronized swimming, horseback riding, ski jumping and darts.
Women's sports were Lucy Bronze and Alex Scott, the most popular football players, which were highly popular among our participants. American sports also gained popularity, with more items in basketball and wrestling than cricket and tennis.
I impressed the judges. We enjoyed the description of Liverpool's fullback Andy Robertson's "very bad salt, if not salt", a grieg goalie who was attacked by a French bulldog named Pie during the game.
“We were blown away by the number of participants, the various sports covered and the high standards set,” said the author of football school and judge J. Ben Lyttleton. “The enthusiasm and extensive knowledge each writer showed in their articles was tremendous. There is no doubt that the future of sports writing is bright. ”
Marcus Christenson, football editor of the Guardian and Observer, said: “I had a vibrant, youthful vigor in writing. It's my favorite topic. ”
