Bicyclist killed in ‘tragic’ crash involving HPD vehicle in northeast Houston

Police killed a bicycle on Tuesday night in an accident involving a Houston police cruiser, police said.

The crash was reported just before 9 pm. On the 6900 block on the North Wayside in northeast Houston, the victim was not publicly revealed, but the police said it was male.

Henry Gaw, an HPD assistant professor, said the police are being asked to "priority 2" to request suicide. Police officers in the car did not operate the vehicle's lights and sirens, but the phone guarantees a quick response, Gaw said.

"This is a tragic incident," Gaw said. "We are investigating to ensure compliance with our policies."

Gaw said the area's speed limit is about 35 to 40 miles. He said the intersection where the crash occurred looks dark. Investigators are currently calculating the speed of the vehicle during the accident.

The police said, according to the police station, both HPD cruisers assigned to the northeast station are calling for suicide. According to the dash cam footage provided by OnScene TV, the leading vehicle struck the cyclist.

The victim's family was notified Tuesday night. Investigation is in progress.

Gaw said, "If officers did something wrong, they would be held responsible."
