Pakistan hands over body of Indian BSF soldier who drowned

Pakistan on Tuesday handed over the body of a soldier from the Border Security Force of India (BSF) who had drowned while crossing a nullah to the Indian authorities, the army media wing said in a statement.

Sub-inspector Paritosh Mondal, of the BSF of India, had drowned while crossing Nullah Aik along the working limit within the Kashmir occupied by the Indians, according to Public Relations between Services (ISPR).

According to reports, his body was swept by the currents towards the Pakistani side of the border. Subsequently, the Indian BSF asked the Pakistan Rangers to register their body.

"Pakistan's rangers, Punjab, carried out a search operation, recovered the body and handed it over to Indian BSF today according to the military procedure," the ISPR press release said.

The development occurs at a time of high tension between Pakistan and India following the decision of the Indian government to unilaterally revoke article 370 of its constitution, which granted special autonomy to occupied Kashmir. A blackout of communications and strong restrictions on movement imposed by the Indian authorities since the eve of this development have been in force for almost two months.

Following India's decision to repeal article 370, Pakistan degraded diplomatic relations with New Delhi and suspended all bilateral trade. The Indian ambassador was asked to leave and the train and bus services with India were also suspended.

Last week, Prime Minister Imran Khan viciously criticized the movements of Indians in Kashmir at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
