Big picture: focus on the future
Of course, this series will see players who were part of each team’s World Cup squad but missed out on those matches get playing time, such as Ish Sodhi, Kyle Jamieson, George Linde and Jason Smith. But primarily, the series will serve as a platform for promising talent from both countries who are yet to break into the first team.
For New Zealand, the likes of Tim Robinson and Bevon Jacobs will get more opportunities to shine, while South African fans will be keeping an eye on Jordan Hermann and Nqobani Mokoena, who were the top uncapped scorer and wicket-taker respectively in the most recent SA20 season.
The series also officially begins the two countries’ journey towards the 2028 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by New Zealand. For some players participating in the competition, this is an opportunity to start auditioning early for the larger event.

team news
For the first T20I with many batsmen rested, New Zealand may be a bit bright in that department. Josh Clarkson is likely to take the top five spot due to his versatility, but with South Africa having two left-handers in their top order, Cole McConchie could get the nod to repeat his heroics in the World Cup semi-finals.
New Zealand XI (Am): 1 Devon Conway (Lt), 2 Nick Kelly, 3 Tim Robinson, 4 Bevon Jacobs, 5 Josh Clarkson/Cole McConchie, 6 Mitchell Santner (Capt), 7 Jimmy Neesham, 8 Kyle Jamieson, 9 Ben Sears/Nathan Smith, 10 Zak Foulkes, 11 Ish Sodhi.
Keshav Maharaj will lead South Africa in the 50th T20I and the Hermann brothers will be playing together. Jason Smith, who was originally expected to be South Africa’s finisher in India and Sri Lanka but has fallen down the pecking order due to Tristan Stubbs’ late rise in form, will likely fill that role well in this series.
South Africa XI (Amazon): 1 Connor Esterhuizen (main), 2 Jordan Hermann, 3 Tony de Zorzi, 4 Rubin Hermann, 5 Jason Smith, 6 Wiaan Mulder, 7 George Linde, 8 Keshav Maharaj (capt), 9 Gerald Coetzee, 10 Ottneil Baartman, 11 Lutho Sipamla.

quotes
“New Zealand are a really strong team. They obviously had a great performance in India, but I think because we have a team that’s a lot younger, there’s a lot of energy within the environment. So hopefully it’s a good series and we’ll cross our fingers that we can come out on top.”
