If you’ve ever squinted at the ROG Xbox Ally X’s screen and wished it were a little clearer, Xbox (and Microsoft) will hear you loud and clear. In April 2026, portable gaming PCs will receive a free software update that will make your games even better. Does not include hardware updates or additional costs.
Xbox is launching a feature called Auto Super-Resolution, or Auto-SR, which is Microsoft’s AI-based answer to Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR. This feature upscales video games from 720p up to 1080p and beyond via Windows Central.

What does the Auto SR feature do?
This feature allows Ally X to work smarter, not harder, delivering up to a 30% performance increase. Unlike DLSS and FSR, Auto SR works at the operating system level, meaning developers don’t need to integrate it on a per-game basis. However, the feature still lags behind Nvidia’s DLSS in terms of sheer image quality.
No matter who the developer is or what the game is, Auto SR will mostly work. Currently, this feature only supports DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games. But why is it only available on Xbox Ally X and not on Xbox Ally?

So why does it only appear on Ally X?
The Ally
This feature appears to use Ally X’s NPU to scale video games in real-time without increasing CPU load. Unfortunately, this feature only applies to the X variant as the base model does not have this feature.
One thing worth pointing out is that the April release is technically a preview, not a final, polished release. So the 30% performance figure is interesting, but actual results may vary as Microsoft continues to improve it.
