Gutsy Sri Lanka wins praise as it refuses to abandon Iranian sailors in distress

Sri Lanka is receiving praise from analysts and social media commentators after it intervened to rescue and assist more than 200 Iranian sailors in the escalating conflict in the Indian Ocean, with many calling the island nation’s response courageous and principled.

The Sri Lankan government’s move to acquire the vessel comes after the United States sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena off the coast of Sri Lanka on Wednesday. The attack was one of the rare instances in which a submarine sank a surface warship since World War II and highlighted the expanding scope of the U.S.-Israel war against Iran. The Sri Lankan Navy rescued 32 sailors and recovered 87 bodies after the attack.

Despite rising geopolitical tensions, Colombo doubled its humanitarian approach days later when a second Iranian ship, the IRIS Bushehr, remained near Sri Lankan waters and requested assistance.

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said authorities decided to take control of the Iranian vessel IRIS Bushehr after discussions with Iranian officials and the ship’s captain after one of its engines failed.

“We must understand that this is not a normal situation. This is a request for a vessel belonging to one side to enter our ports. We must consider this in accordance with international treaties and conventions,” he told reporters.

Separately, he wrote to X on Friday: “No civilian should die in war. Our approach is that every human life is as precious as our own.”

IRIS Bushehr has been described in previous Iranian media reports as a naval logistics ship with a helipad.

Before the incident, the Iranian warship participated in the Milan 2026 multinational naval exercise and fleet review recently held in Visakhapatnam, India.

Commentators widely shared reports of Sri Lanka’s rescue operation on social media, highlighting the navy’s quick response to a distress signal from the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena.

Geopolitical commentator and podcast host Carl Zha praised Sri Lanka as a “true guardian of the Indian Ocean” for providing safe harbors and rescuing sailors, while criticizing silence elsewhere.
