In January 2023, Nafe Singh Rathee had courted controversy when his name was raised in the suicide case of Jagdish Rathee, son of former BJP minister Mange Ram Rathee. District Court Jhajjar later granted him anticipatory bail.

On February 25, 2024, Nafe Singh Rathee was shot dead in his car by unidentified gunmen. Police suspected involvement of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Despite attempts to save him, Rathee died from multiple gunshot wounds suffered during the attack.

After his death, his son told the media that Nafe Singh Rathee had received numerous death threats over the past five years. He repeatedly requested police protection from the government.
