On 25 February 2017, he made his List A debut for Punjab in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy. On 6 October 2017, he made his first-class debut for Punjab in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy. On February 28, 2021, he scored a hundred off 42 balls against Madhya Pradesh, the fastest hundred by an Indian in List-A cricket. He captained Punjab in the 2022-23 Ranji season.

In the 2023 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), he scored 112 runs off 51 deliveries to help Punjab post 275 runs for 6 wickets. This is the highest T20 score by any Indian T20 team and the highest six runs per innings (22). He played for Punjab Reds in the 2020 Trident T-20 cricket tournament.

In his first IPL match Royal Challengers Bangalore scored 46 runs off 19 balls at a strike rate of 242 on 12 May 2018. In 2019, he moved to SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH). In the 2022 auction, he was acquired by SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) for Rs 6.5 crore against the base price of Rs 20 lakh.

Tania Singh’s Suicide

On February 20, 2024, a model named Tania Singh (also known as Tanya Singh) committed suicide in her apartment at Happy Elegance Apartments on Vesu Road in Surat, Gujarat. She committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling.

Police later said that Tania had made a last call to Abhishek Sharma from her mobile phone and upon further investigation, many pictures of Abhishek and Tania were found on her mobile phone and a summons was sent to Abhishek for questioning. According to reports, they were in a relationship and broke up a few months before this incident, after which Abhishek blocked her phone number and other social media accounts.

Heated exchanges during the game

He courted controversy when he got into a heated altercation with Digvesh Singh Rathi during a match against Lucknow Super Giants on May 19, 2025. Digvesh Singh Rathi fired him and celebrated with the infamous “laptop celebration” for which he had been punished twice before. The gesture angered Sharma, which led to him returning to the stadium and confronting Rathi. This led to the BCCI and the IPL governing body imposing a 25% match fee penalty on him, while Digvesh was slapped with a 50% match fee penalty and suspended for the next match.
