Perplexity Debuts “Computer” AI System That Can Run Other AI Agents For Months

Perplexity has launched a new tool called “Computer” designed to help users assign complex tasks and have them completed through a coordinated system of AI agents. This feature is currently available to Perplexity Max subscribers.

The company describes the computer as a system that can create and execute entire workflows and run them for long periods of time, including hours or months.

A multi-agent, multi-model approach

Users use their computers to define their desired outcomes, such as planning and executing a local digital marketing campaign or building an Android app for research purposes. The system then divides the goal into subtasks and assigns them to multiple AI agents.

Each agent runs a model selected for its particular strengths. The core inference engine uses Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6. Gemini handles deep research tasks, Nano Banana is used for image generation, Veo 3.1 manages video production, Grok supports lightweight tasks where speed is critical, and ChatGPT 5.2 is used for long context recall and extensive searches.

The best model strategy for this task differs from competitors such as Claude Cowork, which relies solely on Anthropic’s models.

All operations run in the cloud within an isolated computing environment. Perplexity says each work environment includes access to a real file system, a real browser, and built-in tool integration.

The company positioned the computer as a way to simplify workflows that power users were already configuring manually. Advanced users often combine multiple AI models and use protocols such as Model Context Protocol (MCP) to give those models access to local files and applications.

Perplexity Computer takes a different technological approach, but aims for a similar result: coordinated AI agents that operate across user files, services, and applications.

This concept builds on earlier efforts such as OpenClaw, which explored similar multi-agent orchestration. Perplexity’s Computer expands on these ideas by packaging workflow automation into an integrated, cloud-based system designed for broader accessibility.
