Trump working group recommends giving regulators ability to deny uranium imports from Russia, China

WASHINGTON: Trump administration officials in a report on Thursday recommended giving regulators the ability to deny certain imports of nuclear fuel from Russia and China and take other measures to help the struggling U.S. nuclear industry.
The report also recommended that the Commerce Department extend Russia's Suspension Agreement, which set a ceiling on Russian uranium imports to 20% of the US market, "to protect against future dumping of uranium." The suspension agreement expires this year.
US Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette told reporters in a call that the report from the Nuclear Fuels Task Force was a "road map to what we believe should be done not only to revitalize but also to restore American leadership in this entire industry. "
Brouillette said President Donald Trump may have issued executive orders at some point in the future to support the findings of the report, which also sought to drive research and development on new reactor technologies, such as small modular reactors.
