Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari on Wednesday condemned the sexist and derogatory statements of PML-N leader Talal Chaudhry about Pakistan's leader Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Kanwal Shozab on a live television show.
in a cheep published today, Mazari said: "Talal [Chaudhry] and his cohorts including [Khawaja] Asif abuses women inside and outside parliament and does not have the moral courage to apologize. "
The minister was referring to an exchange that took place between Chaudhry and Shozab on 24 HD news Program DNA, which aired on November 4. During the program, the PML-N leader resorted to inexcusably rude and sexist language when Shozab scolded him for interrupting her.
A visibly angry Shozab called him for his comments and asked the host to tell the PML-N leader to let her speak. Chaudhry, however, continued to pass misogynist comments. At one point, when Shozab told him to "learn to respect women," Chaudhry said: "First learn to act as such."
Current affairs analyst Mosharraf Zaidi shared a clip from the exchange on Twitter, who described Chaudhry as a "habitual criminal" and described his language as "sick."
This is not the first time that Chaudhry, who was sentenced last year for contempt of court, has issued sexist comments about his fellow politicians. Earlier this year, his derogatory comments about the prime minister's assistant in information and dissemination Firdous Ashiq Awan had provoked anger on social networks.
In 2016, the Minister of Human Rights, Mazari, herself had been subject to derogatory comments by PML-N leader Khawaja Asif, whom she referred to in her tweet. Asif, who was in the government at the time, had used an offensive term for her on the floor of the National Assembly when she raised questions about a speech she gave about the detachment of cargo in Ramazan.
When she, along with her fellow politicians, protested against her language, Asif refused to apologize. Then, speaker Ayaz Sadiq had taken the blame on Mazari, asking him why he had not stopped talking after the insult was directed at her. However, Sadiq then ordered Asif's words to be deleted from the record.
