FO rejects allegation by Kabul of envoy’s mistreatment – Newspaper

ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Ministry on Tuesday rejected the accusation of abuse by Kabul against his ambassador to Pakistan and emphasized adherence to diplomatic norms.

"The Government of Pakistan extends due respect and courtesy and expects foreign envoys to conform to established diplomatic norms and principles," said the FO, rejecting the statement by the Afghan foreign ministry of "maltreatment" of its envoy.

The Afghan Foreign Ministry had previously claimed that its Ambassador to Islamabad Atif Mashal was summoned by Intelligence between Services (ISI) and the conduct of the "personnel of the entity" was in "contradiction with diplomatic norms and principles." The Afghan Foreign Ministry had not mentioned when the incident occurred.

The war of words between Islamabad and Kabul on the alleged harassment of diplomats began on Sunday when the Pakistani government said that the officers and staff of the Pakistan embassy in Kabul were "obstructed on the road and the embassy vehicles were also run over by motorcycles as they headed towards the embassy. " "The consular section of the Pakistani embassy then suspended its services.

The Afghan Affairs Officer was summoned to the FO for conveying "serious concerns" about the security of Pakistan's diplomatic missions staff in Afghanistan.

The last FO statement pointed to the continued harassment of Pakistani diplomats and embassy staff, as it said the incidents had been occurring in recent days.

"We urge the Afghan authorities to take immediate measures to ensure the security of the personnel of Pakistan's diplomatic missions in Afghanistan," the FO added.

The statement by the Afghan Foreign Ministry had previously committed to "seriously investigating" the alleged harassment of Pakistan embassy personnel and offered guarantees to provide them with security.
