According to Isaac Reynolds, senior product manager for pixel cameras, Google leveraged the wedding photographer's expertise in building pixel 4's face correction feature.
In an interview with The Vergecast, Reynolds helped his team take wedding photographers out of certain lines, such as "thinning their face, making their lips bigger, and making their nose smaller." Activate the function.
The Reynolds team asked photographers what they had done to correct the customer's photo because the people who attended the wedding had already tried to make the best look that day. One thing Reynolds specifically mentioned in the interview is skin smoothing, but Pixel 4's face correction attempts to imitate the behavior of a wedding photographer.
With skin smoothing, the Pixel 4 face correction attempts to remove "not what it is today". For example, there are red marks left over when people hold their faces on their hands for too long. As the camera increases the exposure, it tries to remove that mark to create a "ray".
Face Correction is on by default when you take selfies with Pixel 4 cameras, which can look like your best self without the need for additional filters and augmentation, so you need to inspire people with confidence.
Google has thought a lot about where to draw a line about how much editing is going on. Some apps have filters that completely change a person's face, but competitors Apple are on the other side of the spectrum because they don't offer built-in face correction on their iPhone.
