When asked if she ever regretted not getting married, especially since many people fear loneliness in old age, she made it clear that the thought never bothered her. “Not at all. I saw the kind of people that were out there. When I went out with the guys my mother set me up with, the premise of marriage completely put me off. They were so picky! They took longer than me to get ready and kept preening themselves in front of the mirror. The narcissism was repulsive. I know it sounds silly, but these little things really irritated me. There was also the case of my heroes Rajesh Khanna and Vinod Khanna getting a scolding from their girlfriends during remote shoots because they were wandering around and having fun at night instead of being in bed. I would never have been able to accept someone dictating the conditions to me; “I just wasn’t cut out for it.”Parekh also recalled a time when he was about to get married. Talking about the incident, he revealed how an unexpected moment changed everything. “I came very close to marrying a professor from the United States once. I was visiting him and we were in a cafe at 2 in the morning, when he turned to me and said nonchalantly, ‘I have a girlfriend and you’re standing in the way.’ It caught me completely off guard. In a way, that was the last straw for me in this whole wedding thing. My friend was traveling with me at the time and when I told her we were returning to India right then and there, she asked me how I wasn’t devastated that I had so unceremoniously cut ties with the man I was supposed to marry.”The actress once admitted that Nasir Hussain was the only man she loved. “Yes, Nasir Saab was the only man I ever loved. It is not respectful to those we love if we do not acknowledge their presence before the world,” she had said. The actress has also openly spoken about her feelings for filmmaker Nasir Hussain in the past. However, he explained why marriage was never an option. In her autobiography, Parekh wrote: “I was never a home-wrecker. There was never any bad blood between Nasir Saab’s family and me. In fact, I was very happy to see Nusrat (Hussain’s daughter) and Imran Khan (grandson) at the launch of my book. “I feel like I’ve lived my life decently and without harming anyone.”
