Big picture: focus on the future

These two teams met in the T20 World Cup semi-finals just 10 days ago, but start this five-match series looking very different. The squad that will face off at Mount Maunganui on Sunday includes only four players who have left Kolkata, three of them from New Zealand.

Spotlight: Bevon Jacobs and Ottneil Baartman

Bevon Jacobs Although he has emerged as an explosive batsman with a lot of promise, in his four T20I innings he has scored a high score of 44 not out and struck out a lowly 111. But he comes into this series just two months after scoring his fifth consecutive half-century in the Super Smash, the most by a New Zealander in T20s. Fast bowling is where South Africa belong, but Baartman will be hoping to use this series as an opportunity to add to his 22 T20I wickets and earn a place in the first-choice XI. The conditions in New Zealand are conducive to bowling pace, and his variation will make him a big threat as well as difficult to get rid of, as batsmen in SA20 have found out.

For the first T20I with many batsmen rested, New Zealand may be a bit bright in that department. Josh Clarkson is likely to take the top five spot due to his versatility, but with South Africa having two left-handers in their top order, Cole McConchie could get the nod to repeat his heroics in the World Cup semi-finals.

Keshav Maharaj is set to become the 15th player to play 50 T20Is for South Africa, taking him level with Albie Morkel in number of appearances.
This will be the first T20I between New Zealand and South Africa at Mount Maunganui. New Zealand has hosted South Africa in just four T20Is in the past, winning only the first in 2012. The last crash in New Zealand dates back to 2017.
