Xbox turns 25 this year, and Microsoft is celebrating with one of the most exciting updates Windows gamers have been waiting for. Starting in April, Xbox Mode will be rolling out to Windows 11 on all PC form factors, including laptops, desktops, and tablets in select markets.
What exactly is Xbox mode?
Think of it as flipping a switch that turns your Windows 11 PC into a console. Designed for play from the comfort of your back, the clean, full-screen interface lets you browse your game library, launch titles, use the Game Bar, and switch between apps without a mouse or keyboard.

“Xbox Mode allows players to seamlessly transition between productivity and play with a familiar full-screen and controller-optimized Xbox experience that embraces the openness of Windows,” said Jason Ronald, Vice President of Xbox Next Generation.
This is no small update. A fully controller-optimized gaming experience built directly into Windows 11. You get the best of both worlds without compromise.

Microsoft says it’s brought everything it learned from building the Xbox gaming OS directly to Windows. This experience was first tested on the ROG Xbox Ally handheld and is now available for all Windows 11 devices.
Why is this important to PC gamers?
Currently, gaming on Windows PCs can feel disjointed to users who are used to gaming on consoles. Instead of a game-focused interface, players must navigate a desktop environment designed primarily for productivity. Xbox Mod solves this problem by providing a distraction-free interface built specifically for gaming.
Xbox Mode also ties into the broader Xbox Play Anywhere catalog, which has grown to over 1,500 games. So your game library and progress will sync seamlessly across devices. If you’ve always wished your gaming PC would feel as easy as a console, April will come too soon.
