British police said they had banned a pro-Iran march scheduled to take place in London on Sunday, citing the potential for “extreme tension” with counter-protesters and the risk it posed to Tehran amid the Middle East conflict.
The Al Quds march in central London is organized annually by the Islamic Human Rights Commission, and police say it supports the Iranian government.
In the UK, the bar for banning protests is high. Police said this was the first demonstration in 14 years but the risk of public disorder was “so serious that it was right to prevent it”. The ban also applies to all counter-protests.
The Islamic Human Rights Committee previously said a march in support of Palestinian liberation was taking place in X.
Police said arrests had been made at previous Al Quds marches for supporting terrorist organizations and anti-Semitic hate crimes, and that even with the ban in place, they were facing a “challenging and potentially violent weekend”.
