Keane transferred to Manchester United in 1993 for a record transfer fee of £3.75 million. He had an exceptional first season with the club, as United won the Premier League title and the FA Cup. After a disappointing 1994-95 season, United came back strong in 1995-96 to win the Premier League and FA Cup again. The club won another Premier League title in the 1996-97 season. After that season, United captain Eric Cantona unexpectedly retired and Keane became the club’s new captain. However, he would end up missing most of the 1997-98 season due to injury. Keane returned in top form for the 1998-99 season, guiding United to a treble of Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League titles. In the 1999-2000 season, he helped United win their sixth Premier League title in eight years, earning him FWA Footballer of the Year honours.

United captured another Premier League title in the 2000-01 season. However, Keane caused controversy that season when he committed a knee-high foul on Alfie Haaland during the Manchester derby. Although he initially received a three-match suspension and fine, further punishment followed after Keane revealed in his 2002 autobiography that his attack on Haaland was premeditated. This was largely due to an earlier incident in which Haaland falsely accused Keane of faking an injury on the pitch. As a result of his admission, Keane was banned from taking part in five further matches and was fined heavily. He got into further trouble when he elbowed Sunderland’s Jason McAteer in August 2002, resulting in a further five-match suspension and a large fine. In the 2002-03 season, Keane won his seventh and final Premier League title with United. The following season they won their fourth and final FA Cup. Keane left United by mutual agreement at the end of 2005 amid growing tensions with the club management and other players.
