Early life

Gesaffelstein was born Mike Lévy on June 24, 1985 in Lyon, France. His stage name is a portmanteau of the German word Gesamtkunstwerk (“total work of art”) and the German theoretical physicist Albert Einstein. Gesaffelstein began producing music when he was 16, after starting to play an analog synthesizer. He told Vogue Hommes International: “I was lucky to have a DJ as a neighbor, a great record collector who owned synthesizers, and with whom I was able to get started in creating sounds, teaching me how the machines worked and getting interested in production. One thing led to another, without a particular goal, I continued making music.”

Career

In 2008, Gesaffelstein released the EPs “Modern Walk” and “Vengeance Factory”. The following year, he launched the independent record label Zone with Alex Reynaud, The Hacker and David Rimokh, and subsequently released the EPs “The Operator” (2009), “Variations” (2010), “Conspiracy PT. I” (2011), “Conspiracy PT. II” (2011), “Zone 4: Crainte / Errance” (2011) and “Bromance #4: Rise Of Depravity” (2012). Gesaffelstein appeared on the cover of the July 2012 issue of DJ Mag, and that year his song “Viol” was featured in commercials for Givenchy and Citroën. He co-produced two songs on Kanye West’s 2013 album, “Yeezus.” Gesaffelstein released his debut album, “Aleph,” in October 2013, and it peaked at No. 16 on the US Billboard Top Dance Albums chart and featured the singles “Pursuit” and “Hate or Glory.” In 2015 he composed the soundtrack for the Franco-Belgian film “Disorder”. In 2018, Gesaffelstein released his second album, “Hyperion”, which peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Top Dance Albums chart and number 13 on the Lithuanian Albums Chart. The single “Lost in the Fire”, a collaboration with The Weeknd, reached the top 10 of the charts in numerous countries. The single was certified Platinum or higher in 10 countries. In 2019, Gesaffelstein released the EP “Novo Sonic System”, which was followed by his third album, “Gamma”, in 2024 and his first live album, “Enter the Gamma (Live)”, in 2026.

personal life

In a 2014 interview with Vice, Gesaffelstein addressed the misconception that he is mysterious. He said: “I know in the US and also in Europe people think I’m a mysterious guy and they think I’m dark and all that shit. But I’m not. Just because I try to focus on the music. And the only thing I give to people, it’s just music, you know. I don’t have Instagram. I don’t put my food on Twitter. I don’t take shit photos. And today, every DJ, every musician does this shit. It’s crazy. And when you’re not doing that, you’re mysterious. But I’m not. I’m simply a musician. The only thing I can give people is music.

Gesaffelstein has earned three Grammy nominations, winning Best Remixed Recording for “Abracadabra – Gesaffelstein Remix” (shared with Lady Gaga) in 2026.
