- GREETINGS
- SPANGRAM: GOOD MORNING
- My rating: Easy
- My score: Perfect
“I remember the lyrics”hell is in hello“from the musical Paint your car because that’s how I started today’s Strands game.
It comes from the song wandering starwhich was magnificently sung gruffly by actor Lee Marvin, whose character preferred to leave places rather than reach them.
Unlike Mr. Marvin, I love elegant people with an ostentatious vocabulary and would love to be greeted by someone every morning, preferably a butler with a tray of tea and toast offering GREETINGS.
I’m also partial to an AHOY: this was the telephone greeting proposed by Alexander Graham Bell, something his less nautically inclined telephone rival, Thomas Edison, replaced with the less cheerful HELLO.
Missing from this list is the greeting everyone term used during my school years, the now largely redundant “watcha” and its farewell equivalent “seeya”.
Yesterday’s NYT Strands Answers (Monday, March 9, Game #736)

- BEAN
