NZ vs Zim, 2nd ODI – Zimbabwe batter Kelis Ndhlovu taken for scans after being hit by Bree Illing bouncer

Zimbabwe’s opening batsman Kelis Ndhlovu was rushed to a local hospital from Dunedin University Oval after being hit by a Brie Ealing bouncer during the second ODI between New Zealand and Zimbabwe on Sunday.

Ndhlovu put together a 25-run opening partnership with Modester Mupachikwa when he bowed to a short delivery from Illing. She was wearing a helmet.

She immediately fell to the ground and was treated at the scene. She was then taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Tendai Makusha was Ndhlovu’s concussion replacement.

“It’s good news. She’s responding now, that’s really good to hear,” Zimbabwe interim coach Kate Ebrahim said at the post-match press conference. “She is just recovering and we will take the next steps once we see the scan results.”

Ebrahim said he spoke to Mupachikwa after Ndhlovu left the scene.

“We touched on that briefly. I made sure the other opener was mentally in a position to continue. She was right there with her. Yeah, so I put my hand on the base and made sure she was okay. Just give her a few words and just check in. [we] Keep going with Chipo. [Mugeri-Tiripano, the next batter] “When she came in, we quickly came together as a team to provide support…and check in on everyone first because it can be really shocking for everyone.”

New Zealand won the game by eight wickets, with Amelia Kerr starring with a seven-wicket haul to take the ODI series 2-0 with one game remaining.
