Steven Gerrard is an English soccer coach and former soccer player who has a net worth of $90 million. Considered one of the greatest midfielders of all time, Steven Gerrard spent the majority of his playing career at Liverpool, winning three League Cups, two FA Cups and the 2005 UEFA Champions League. He also played for the England national team and MLS club LA Galaxy before retiring in 2016, and later found success as manager of Scottish Premiership club Rangers.
Contracts, salaries and professional earnings
Steven Gerrard’s financial journey reflects his evolution from local Liverpool prodigy to global football figure and highly paid international manager. Over more than two decades in professional football, he earned substantial sums through club contracts, performance bonuses, management deals and sponsorship partnerships.
Liverpool FC (1998-2015)
Gerrard signed his first professional contract with Liverpool at the age of 17 and made his senior debut in 1998. As his importance to the club grew, so did his compensation. By the early 2000s, he was signing enhanced extensions that reflected his status as captain and one of the Premier League’s elite midfielders.
His peak salary as a player occurred during the period 2009-2014. In 2009, he agreed a four-year contract worth around £140,000 a week, equivalent to approximately £7.3m a year before bonuses. In the final years of his tenure at Liverpool, his weekly salary increased to approximately £180,000, putting his annual earnings at approximately £9-10 million in base salary and up to £13.2 million ($16 million) per year when bonuses and performance incentives were included.
A 2012 extension reportedly included an ambassador clause, guaranteeing a long-term partnership and potential post-retirement earning relationship with Liverpool. Across 17 seasons at Anfield, Gerrard is believed to have earned more than £100m in gross salary before tax.
Los Angeles Galaxy (2015-2016)
In 2015, Gerrard signed with LA Galaxy as a Designated Player in Major League Soccer. His 18-month contract paid approximately $6 million per year, making him one of the highest-paid players in MLS at the time.
By the end of his run in late 2016, he had earned approximately $9 million in total base salary from the club. While brief, the move significantly boosted his overall career earnings and expanded his business profile in the United States.
Management Contracts
After retiring as a player, Gerrard moved into management, where his earnings continued to rise.
At Rangers (2018-2021), he reportedly earned around £2.5 million per year. His tenure culminated in the club’s 2020-2021 Scottish Premiership title, ending Celtic’s nine-year dominance and enhancing Gerrard’s managerial reputation.
In November 2021, Aston Villa paid Rangers approximately £4.25 million in compensation to secure him as manager. His annual salary at Villa was estimated to be over £5 million. However, his time at the club lasted less than a year.
In 2023, Gerrard signed a lucrative three-year deal with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq worth around £15.2 million ($19 million) per year. The deal immediately placed him among the highest-paid coaches in world football, behind only the likes of Diego Simeone, Pep Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp at the time of signing.
Endorsements and commercial income
Throughout his playing career, Gerrard maintained a strong portfolio of endorsements. It has had a long-standing relationship with Adidas and has also partnered with major brands including Mars and Lucozade.
At his commercial peak, he was estimated to earn approximately £3 million ($4 million to $5 million) a year from endorsements and endorsement deals. Additionally, he reportedly received a £1.5 million advance for his autobiography, marking another major payday outside of football.
Combined, Gerrard’s playing contracts, managerial salaries, sponsorships and media ventures have made him one of the most financially successful English footballers of his generation.
Education and early life
Steven Gerrard was born on May 30, 1980 in Whiston, Merseyside, England as the second child of Julie and Paul. In the 2009–10 season, he scored 12 goals in 49 appearances in total. Gerrard’s next two seasons were among his worst, as a groin injury significantly limited his playing time. He made only 24 total appearances in the 2010-11 season and 28 total appearances in the 2011-12 season. However, Gerrard played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s victory over Cardiff City in the 2012 Football League Cup final. He signed a contract extension with the club in 2013 and that same year became the longest-serving captain in Liverpool’s history. Gerrard also scored his 100th Premier League goal.
