Leading European destinations are set to issue more than 10,000 visas to Pakistani skilled workers, marking a new push for legal immigration routes and regulation of overseas employment.
Italy said it would open greater legal pathways for Pakistani workers, with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announcing that 10,500 visas would be allocated to skilled workers in the country as part of efforts to encourage legal migration.
The announcement followed a meeting between Pakistan’s Federal Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi and his Italian counterpart in Rome, where the two sides discussed internal security ties and coordinated steps to address illegal immigration.
During the meeting, Piantedosi said Italy also plans to provide visa-free entry to Pakistani diplomatic passport holders, noting that the issue was raised by Naqvi earlier and is currently being worked on.
In addition to immigration, the two ministers reviewed cooperation in key security areas, including efforts to combat human trafficking networks, drug trafficking, and terrorism. Both sides also acknowledged ongoing measures to disrupt irregular migration routes.
Naqvi told his Italian counterpart that Pakistan had strengthened checks and surveillance at airports and maritime borders, which helped stamp out illegal departures. Piantedosi praised Pakistan’s approach, saying progress against illegal immigration, human trafficking and drugs was noteworthy.
The Italian interior minister added that the two countries will work to strengthen cooperation in promoting legal migration and expand cooperation in other areas of mutual interest.
