East Bengal 2000-2014
Gurpreet signed a professional contract with East Bengal Football Club in 2010. He made only five appearances in the 2009–10 season and was later loaned out to Indian Arrows FC (now Pailan Arrows) in the 2010–11 season due to lack of playing time. He returned to East Bengal FC in 2011 and began playing regularly as first-choice goalkeeper after the 2011 Federation Cup. In his first start for East Bengal FC in the 2011-12 season, he lost 0-1 to Churchill Brothers FC. His AFC Cup debut came on 6 March 2012 against Al-Oruba, a result that East Bengal FC lost 0–1. His last league match for East Bengal FC was against United SC on 28 April 2014, a result that East Bengal FC won 0–3.
Starback FC 2014-2017
Gurpreet signed a three-year contract with Norwegian club Stabæk on 15 August 2014. He made his senior debut for the club on 18 January 2015 in a 4–1 friendly win over second division side Polo. He made his league debut against IK Start FC in May 2016, resulting in a 5–0 win.

Bengaluru FC 2017-
Gurpreet joined Bengaluru FC in August 2017. His debut for the club came on 25 April in the AFC Cup knockout stage match against F.C. His league debut started with a clean sheet against Mumbai City FC. Gurpreet kept seven clean sheets in his first season and helped his team reach the final of the 2017-18 edition of the Indian Super League, where they lost 3-2 to Chennaiyin FC. He signed a five-year contract with the club, extending his tenure until May 2023. In the 2018-19 season, Gurpreet kept seven clean sheets and helped his team win the Indian Super League trophy in 2018-19.

Gurpreet topped the charts with 11 clean sheets in the 2019-20 season and won the Golden Glove. He was appointed vice-captain of the team for the 2021-22 season following the departure of Dimas Delgado at the end of the 2020-21 season. In February 2023, he signed a five-year extension to his contract with the club, until 2028.

international career
Gurpreet’s India U19 debut came in the 2010 AFC U-19 Championship qualifier against Iraq U19 on 5 November 2009. His debut for the Indian senior football team was against Turkmenistan in the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Gurpreet’s first clean sheet came on 12 November 2015 against Guam, with the score ending 1-0 in the Indian side. Gurpreet was included in the squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nepal but remained on the bench for both legs. He captained the Indian national team against Puerto Rico in 2016. He led the Indian football team in the 2022 World Cup qualifying group stage match against Qatar, which ended 0-0 with Gurpreet stopping 11 shots on target.

Gurpreet was once criticized for making a derogatory gesture towards supporters of his team East Bengal FC at Kalyani Stadium during a match. As a result, Gurpreet was temporarily disqualified from the team and faced criticism from the home fans. However, the culprit later publicly apologized for his actions via social media.
