Amazon’s new AR app lets you have fun with all your Prime Day boxes.

Experience a spooky AR experience this Halloween

The online shopping frenzy that is Amazon Prime Day is upon us again. Customers all over the world are ready to splash cash on all kinds of bargains.

If you’re looking to make the most of Prime Day (or Prime), me — The event will take place on October 13th and 14th. Then it is likely that a lot of cardboard boxes will come to you.

With that in mind, Amazon has come up with a new app that lets you squeeze a little fun out of your boxes before you throw them in the recycling bin.

Called Amazon Augmented Reality (can you guess what that’s about yet?), this free iOS and Android app works with QR codes on Amazon boxes for what Amazon describes as “an interactive, shareable augmented reality experience.”

The video (top) shows some of the entertainment you can enjoy by launching the app. Although the video focuses on a Halloween theme, a screenshot of the app (below) shows that there’s a lot of different content.

Kids will definitely enjoy the Amazon Augmented Reality experience. In fact, the box may be more interesting than the contents.

To use this feature, open the app, point your camera at the QR code on the Amazon box, and wait for the display to come to life.

“If your device supports TrueDepth technology, the app uses your device camera to track facial movements to enable certain features, such as selfie mode,” Amazon says, adding that any information processed using this technology “remains on your device and is not otherwise stored, processed, or shared by Amazon.”
