OnePlus has put Samsung on notice

Yesterday I received an announcement and a ban on OnePlus' new top-of-the-line smartphone. Here is my review of OnePlus 8 Pro and a video review of Jon Porter's OnePlus 8

This phone is slightly different, but it is interesting for related reasons. OnePlus has always been a fragmented rebellion in the footsteps of a bigger and firmer company. If it's not clear, it's Samsung code. But each time, OnePlus' value proposition was able to provide the most interesting items, such as speed and screen quality, because they were not charged for items they weren't interested in.

That said, OnePlus did not directly challenge Samsung, not actually. The Galaxy and Note phone families have two advantages over the OnePlus phone. First, Samsung has had significant mobile carrier support in the United States, and mobile phones have more prominent deployment and marketing support than competitors such as HTC and LG. Second, Samsung phones always have all the features you can expect from "Flagship".

First, let's make it clear that despite Samsung's phone quality as well as joint marketing deals, a significant portion of the support for that carrier has been fully secured. Unfortunately, except for one note that tends to insult itself, Samsung's phones have been consistently reliable and great. Samsung's willingness to allow carriers to embed software into their phones is also not hurt.

For the first time this year, OnePlus is now competing much more directly for US carrier interest. After receiving interim support from T-Mobile, I came to partner with Verizon. Verizon and T-Mobile decided to use the regular OnePlus 8 instead of the 8 Pro. I suspect they are simply trying to deploy OnePlus as an inexpensive alternative to the Galaxy S20 and I suspect OnePlus is not upset about it. That's the key to the way the brand eventually started.

But with OnePlus 8 Pro, OnePlus is directly challenging Samsung's another historical advantage: the specs. There is no longer a clear spec-based reason to choose a Samsung Galaxy S20 phone over OnePlus 8 Pro. Crucially, I claim it chooses between the S20's rather consistent camera and the 8 Pro's faster and cleaner software. But what came to the conclusion in the review is actually a coin toss.

Therefore, OnePlus 8 challenges Samsung in mobile carrier relations, and 8 Pro challenges Samsung in features and specifications. It can add a very elegant story of a rebel that slowly builds up its ability to occupy a huge rebel.

Good story, but it doesn't really match OnePlus' reality. The company doesn't want to talk about it, but it's part of a big company called BBK that owns Oppo, Vivo and Realme. Phones from these companies are often more than passing on to each other, or at least in technology. For example, Oppo's new flagship Find X2 Pro does the same 1440p / 120Hz trick as the OnePlus 8 Pro.

It's a bit surreal to make the story of the start, knowing that OnePlus is a lot more complicated than the beginning of it. But I have peace. Eventually, GM once had Saturn. It can be an innovative department within a larger organization. Whether it is actually happening or whether it is an effective promotion is not as important as the quality of the phone. Reader, quality is good.

Finally, there was a fierce voice that occupied the entire newsletter today. I think Android users in 2020 are getting a pan-steer, blaming Qualcomm and US carriers.

Although 5G is farther than expected, it is still not widespread enough to be a necessity. However, to get the highest level Android phone in 2020, you'll need to use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865. Only works with Qualcomm's 5G modems. I'm not sure that the 865 version that works with 4G is a lot cheaper, but I suspect it will.

In other words, you need to pay 5G tax to purchase the flagship Android phone this year. And the tax is not yet worth it.

Streaming war

NBCUniversal officially joins the streaming war with Peacock launch. This is a really odd rollout. It will be available to certain Comcast customers throughout the month and more availability will be available in July. This is not gorgeous at all, and I like it as a service for Comcast customers, not competitors like Netflix / Disney + / Hulu / CBS / Prime / etc. I don't know if it's the goal (maybe it's probably not) but it definitely works. (Disclaimer: NBCUniversal is owned by Comcast, an investor in Vox Media. The budge.)

Unemployment checks are pending in a coding language that almost nobody knows.. So edge The story of Makena Kelly. Sometimes it is assumed that technology happens so quickly that everything can be easily turned or turned off. But it is an illusion.

Colorado, like most states and territories across the country, has a record unemployment rate. But New York's unemployment system is based on aging software that runs in a coding language decades ago called COBOL. Over the years, COBOL programmers have been aging in the workforce, forcing the country to attract fluent coders during a national crisis. Survey by The budge We found that at least 12 states are still using COBOL in some capacity in the unemployment system. Alaska, Connecticut, California, Iowa, Kansas and Rhode Island all run in old languages.

Google is said to be building its own processors for Pixel and Chromebooks. Or pride Axios There is a scoop. If Samsung couldn't break Qualcomm's US dominance with the Exynos processor, Google would have a big chance. Google is definitely good at certain types of silicon, but this is on a completely different level. I'm hoping Google is trying because it requires competition. But I haven't got hope yet.
