In response to the abysmal state of public toilets in the country, the Salman Sufi Foundation (SSF) has launched a new project aimed at benefiting pedestrians, especially women, who do not have access to clean or safe public toilets in Pakistan.
According to a press release issued on Thursday, the foundation, under the Saaf bath The initiative will establish portable public toilets in Lahore and Karachi during the first phase of the project by February 2020.
To do so, the SSF is partnering with several corporate companies so that they can eventually install portable toilets in all major cities in the country, especially in those areas with a large number of pedestrians, the statement said.
The bathrooms, which will also be accessible to the elderly and with different capacities, will be maintained daily by the foundation coordinators. In addition, the foundation will also guarantee hand sanitizer and plenty of water for the public, it reads.
The press release concluded that the pilot project is in line with the foundation's plan to start a general health and sanitation campaign exclusively for women.
According to a 2015 report by the World Health Organization (WHO), Pakistan was the third largest country where more than 43 million people defecate openly.
