New Pakistani envoy to UN presents credentials to UN chief

Munir Akram, Pakistan's new permanent representative to the United Nations, presented his credentials on Tuesday to the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres.

According to a press release that welcomed Akram to his new position, Guterres said, Pakistan is a "very important player" at the UN, adding that it is a "great pleasure" to receive Akram.

Guterres said he developed a special relationship with Pakistan during his time here as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). He expressed the hope that the new permanent representative of Pakistan will contribute greatly to the exemplary relations between Pakistan and the UN.

On September 30, in a major remodeling in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Imran Khan approved the appointment of Akram.

He is replacing Dr. Maleeha Lodhi, who has served as the envoy of Pakistan to the UN since February 2015.

Akram also served as permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, holding the position for six years between 2002 and 2008.

Who is Munir Akram?

Akram, 74, specializes in multilateral diplomacy and has extensive experience in the UN chapters in New York and Geneva, according to his profile in Pakistan's mission to the UN website.

Akram, who joined Pakistan's Foreign Service in 1967, earned a master's degree in political science and a law degree from the University of Karachi.

In addition to holding various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he also served in the Pakistani missions in several world capitals, including Brussels and Tokyo, and as Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN in Geneva.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution and performance par excellence in the field of diplomacy and foreign policy, the President of Pakistan awarded him the Hilal-i-Quaid-i-Azam award.
