First T20 between Pakistan and Australia called off due to rain – Sport

The first T20 between Pakistan and Australia in Sydney ended without result after it was suspended on Sunday due to rain.

After a rain delay in Pakistan's innings, a revised goal of 119 runs of 15 overs for Australia was set. The game was reduced to 15 overs of play per side after the delay.

Australian captain Aaron Finch gave Australia a quick start with 37 runs from 16 balls, as the hosts went to 41 with no loss in 3.1 overs.

It was at that time that the rain returned to the Sydney Cricket Ground to crush Australia's hopes of climbing 1-0 in the three-game series.

"It's frustrating," Finch said later.

"Restricting them to 107 of 15 envelopes was a great effort and then being on track to get them was nice."

"It was nice to get some out of the way. As I said, a little unfortunate rain played such a part."

When they resumed at 88 for three in the thirteenth after the rain, Asif Ali fell to Richardson for 11 and Imad Wasim to Starc for a duck, leaving Azam to mention his eleventh half century T20.

Previously, Australia won the draw and chose to launch first.

Australia is fit and fresh after a 3-0 series sweep against Sri Lanka, in contrast to Pakistan, who felt embarrassed by a second Sri Lankan home game in three games last month.

That debacle cost Sarfaraz Ahmed his job as a captain and a place in the squad, while experienced activists Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez were also eliminated in the shortest format.

Azam, the world number one in the T20 ranking, is the team captain while trying to rebuild for the World Cup next year.
