Snapchat 3D Paint turns doodle into AR art in latest update

Tired of Snapchat's common face filters? Soon you can paint your own augmented reality lens with a new tool called 3D paint. Launching 3D Paint from October 30, Snapchat users will be able to draw augmented reality using the front or rear camera on iOS 8 and later, and bring the tools to Android with future updates.

3D paint allows users to draw in augmented reality, creating 3D graffiti on people or objects in the environment. New options are available within the AR bar of the app, the designated section for AR filter navigation, then tap 3D Paint. The user can select a color and then add a graffiti on the screen by drawing a picture with his finger on the screen.

If you mix your own custom doodles with objects and people from your smartphone camera, the app will give you more chances to use Snap to get creative. Face graffiti works like a lens and moves with the face, moving the camera around the drawn object creates a 3D effect.

Painting in augmented reality is not a new concept. For example, using the AR Doodle feature on Samsung devices is great for social networks known as augmented reality filters. Snapchat allowed users to add stickers and filters as well as draw pictures on their photos. But in the latest update, we make simple sketching tools in three dimensions.

This update follows Snapchat's new 3D camera mode launched last month. This mode allows users to add spatial detail to snaps to create interactive photos that change based on the angle of the device they are viewing. This feature started with stickers and face filters.

After Snap launches a tool that allows users to design their own filters, 3D Paint creates a new way to customize your photos. Create your own lens is an option for users who don't have a design experience tool to design filters in the app for special events like custom lens design for weddings. Lens Studio lets you create advanced augmented reality filters on your desktop computer.

The new 3D paint tool is first launched for iOS users and starts updating today. Snap says this tool will be available later on Android devices.
