Los Luzeros de Rioverde is a Houston act you need to know

They are known as Los Luzeros de Rioverde, a stylish Norteño costume that adheres to the traditional rules of the genre. And they are one of the biggest bands in Houston.

They are still children. Yaxeni (13), Ricardo (10) and Ailyn Rivera (6) are typical siblings in many ways. They like reading and math. They often talk to each other. They help their younger brother Francisco, 3, and fight for space in a common room.

Yaxeni did not use diapers for a long time when he started playing accordion. She was taught by her mother Indira Rivera, and she learned the instrument by her husband Ricardo Rivera (Sr.). He failed to teach himself, but challenged him to learn from Indira with a joke. She picked it up immediately while watching a YouTube video.

A friend posted a short video about a Yaxeni performance. The title is "Nina de 6 Años Tocando Acordeon". The clip called "A 6-year-old girl playing the accordion" has more than 1 million views. Excited by the reaction, Mom wanted to start a YouTube channel, but Dad didn't want people to think that they forced her kids to perform in the queue. She did it anyway.

Ricardo, Jr. was added to the mix of bajo sexto and vocals. More videos appeared, with some 20 million more views. Los Luzeros de Rioverde now has huge social media, including more than 300,000 Facebook followers, 25,000 on Instagram and tens of thousands of Spotify streams. Ailyn sisters were added to the base earlier this year.

“A little more people are starting to know who we really are,” Yaxeni said. And they knew our name instead of "a girl with an accordion."
