2 dead 14 injured after shooting at Texas homecoming party

Two people were killed in a shooting at a party outside the University of Texas A&M University-Commerce that also left at least 14 others injured, a sheriff's official said.

The shooting took place just before midnight on Saturday in Greenville, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) southwest of the Commerce campus, said Deputy Chief Buddy Oxford of the Hunt County Sheriff's Office. The shooter is still free, Oxford said.

He said the shooting began about 15 minutes after agents arrived outside the site, responding to reports of illegal parking. Officers heard gunfire coming from the back of the building, but they couldn't tell if the shots were fired from inside or outside, Oxford said.

Agents found the two people who had died inside the building, he said, and another 14 people who sought treatment were hospitalized for several injuries. He didn't have a description of the shooter, whom the agents were still looking for early Sunday morning.

Oxford had no information about the severity of the injuries. Medical City Plano spokeswoman Melissa Sauvage told The Associated Press that the hospital had received three victims of the shooting, all of them in critical condition. The hospital is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Greenville.

The shooting occurred when the university east of Dallas celebrated the weekend back home. The event was a welcome party, but it was not a school-approved event, Oxford and university officials said. The deputy chief said officers at the scene estimated that at least 750 people were at the party.

The sheriff's office plans to hold another press conference at 8 am Sunday.
