
Maria Butina, who served nine months in a United States jail for acting as an agent of the Russian government, arrived in Moscow on Saturday, a day after her release from prison.
Butina arrived at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow after leaving Miami, AFP the journalists said. She had been detained in Tallahassee prison in Florida.
In brief comments to reporters in the arrivals area of Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport on Saturday, Butina expressed "great thanks" to those who supported her since her arrest in July 2018.
Butina, a former graduate student at the American University, was arrested in July 2018 on charges of espionage. Last December he pleaded guilty to conspiring to act as an unregistered agent for Russia. She admitted that she and a former Russian lawmaker worked to take advantage of contacts in the National Rifle Association to search for channels for American conservatives.
She was sentenced to 18 months in prison, half of which were credited as already completed.
