Robber sentenced to 27 years in jail over killing of Karachi medical student Nimra in cross-fire – Pakistan

An anti-terrorism court in Karachi on Friday granted a thief 27 years in prison for the murder of a medical student during an exchange of gunfire with the police.

Nimra Baig, a 20-year-old student from Dow University of Health Sciences, was caught in the crossfire between a group of police and suspected thieves near Anda Mor within the mandate of the Sir Syed police station on June 22 February.

In pronouncing its verdict, the court handed down a 27-year collective sentence to the convict, Muhammad Jumma. He was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs180,000 or serve an additional sentence for non-compliance.

According to the prosecution, police officer Adnan and another police officer during a routine patrol saw two alleged thieves riding a motorcycle, who tried to escape.

When the police chased them, the suspects opened fire on the police near Anda Mor. Police retaliated and during the exchange of gunfire, Nimra, a passerby, was hit by a single bullet that proved fatal. She succumbed to her injuries in a hospital later.

Initially, police claimed that Nimra was killed by bullets fired by thieves, but the post-mortem examination conducted at the Jinnah Graduate Medical Center revealed that the bullet in question had been fired from a "high-speed weapon."

A police team charged with investigating the student's death also concluded that she was killed by a bullet fired by law enforcement personnel, sources said. Dawn in March.

One of the two thieves, Riaz, also died in the shooting while his accomplice Muhammad Jumma was arrested on condition of injury and tried on multiple charges.

A case was filed against the convict under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter the public servant from fulfilling his duty), 324 (attempted murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Criminal Code read with Section 7 (punishment for acts of terrorism) of the Antiterrorist Law of 1997, at the Sir Syed police station.
