PM calls out international media for ignoring dire human rights

Prime Minister Imran Khan called on international media on Friday to continue giving "main coverage" to the ongoing protests in Hong Kong but "ignoring the serious human rights crisis" in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

"I am baffled about how international media continue to cover the headlines of the Hong Kong protests, but ignore the serious human rights crisis in IOJK, an internationally recognized disputed territory, illegally annexed by India with 900,000 soldiers imposing a siege of 8 million cashmere. " [contd] for more than 2 months, with a total blackout of communications, thousands of people incarcerated, including [the] full spectrum of political leadership plus children, and a growing humanitarian crisis, "the prime minister wrote on Twitter.

"In IOJK, 100,000 Kashmir have been killed for 30 years fighting for their right to self-determination as the international community has committed to them through the resolutions of the UN Security Council," he added.

India imposed a strict curfew on August 5 after stripping Kashmir of his statehood while Indian troops flooded the Kashmir valley.

Mobile Internet and telephone services have been reduced and access to landlines remains irregular, affecting daily life and business in the valley, home to approximately 7 million people. More than 2,000 people, including the main political leaders, are locked up or under house arrest.

Prime Minister Imran, who declared himself an "ambassador for Kashmir," has raised the issue of continuous blockade on multiple platforms, including the UN General Assembly, and has shared concerns about a possible massacre in occupied Kashmir.

“Eight million people in an open jail are unprecedented in this day and age. The biggest concern is what happens once the curfew is lifted? We fear with 900,000 soldiers there, there will be a massacre, ”the prime minister had said last month.
