India has located the spacecraft that was trying to land on the moon but has not yet been able to communicate with it, the Space Research Organization of India (ISRO) said on Tuesday.
The landing module was making a "soft" or controlled landing near the South Pole of the moon on Saturday when it lost contact with the ground control in the final stage of the descent.
Space experts said the landing module may have fallen faster than planned and landed on the moon, in a setback for India's space program that has captivated millions of compatriots.
ISRO said the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft, which is orbiting the moon, had located the landing module but did not say if it had been damaged.
"Every effort is being made to establish communication with the landing module," the state space agency said on Twitter.
Only the United States, Russia and China have landed on the moon. The Beijing Chang & # 39; e-4 probe landed on the other side this year. Scientists believe there could be water ice at the South Pole.
