Shiite communities across the Muslim world on Tuesday commemorated the death of Imam Husain in Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram.
Imam Husain was martyred along with members of his family during the Battle of Karbala that took place in the year 61 BC. C. in the current south of Iraq.
In Pakistan, the Ashura processions were carried out in the midst of strict security measures in the main cities, including Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Quetta.
In Iraq, hundreds of thousands held Ashura processions amid reinforced security in Karbala and the capital, Baghdad, marching through the streets. Many of the faithful beat their chest and tied themselves with chains in a symbolic expression of pain.
In Tehran, participants marched in the streets while they beat their chest or whipped their shoulders with chains while they played the drums. Meanwhile, the actors recreated the events of Ashura with costumes.
